The Down Low on:
Your Beehive Hairdo How-To
Larry King created the ultimate updo for the Couture runway, but here is how to get the look in real life.
Yes guys, sky-high hair is back, and the beautifully classic 60’s beehive is a lot more doable than it looks! Want to know how to do a beehive hairdo straight from the Tamara Ralph couture show? Larry made the finish soft and natural, with careful back-combing (don’t worry - we’ll tell you how!) to create a slightly fluffy texture with serious volume which is the perfect way to recreate this look at home. You don’t need to save your favourite hair ideas for the salon, we’re here to show you exactly how to own your style and learn the quick tricks from Larry himself. Here is everything you need to know to do a beehive hairdo, couture style!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Larry King My Nanna’s Mousse
- A Good Strong Hold Hairspray
- Larry King Flyaway Kit
- Dyson Supersonic
- Tail Comb
- Bristle Brush
- Kirby Grips
- Hair Pins
WHAT YOU DO:
STEP ONE
First things first, grab a generous amount of mousse and work it through your hair. Then, blow dry with a round brush to really lift the roots, you’re going for major volume here, the fluffier, the better!
STEP TWO
Next up, make a side parting. There is a trick to getting the perfect ‘60’s placement. Take your tail comb and line it up with the middle of one eyebrow (choose whichever side your hair naturally wants to part). Then start at the hairline and make your parting about 2 inches deep, sweep that section of hair to either side.
STEP THREE
Now it’s time to backcomb! Take that back section of hair and starting at the nape of your neck, lift up small sections, spray with hairspray and gently comb down towards the root. Don’t be shy with the hairspray for that extra hold! Once you’ve done the sides, head up to the crown and go wild with the backcombing. You want that beehive to sit really high.
STEP FOUR
Now for the smoothing. Grab a bristle brush and gently sweep the hair from one side, all the way over to the other side. Use some grips to pin it in place as you go. Then, take the other side and smooth it over the grips, making sure it covers them, and twist the ends to keep them together. Secure the twist with some pins, and now you have a bass to gently roll and tuck your beehive into. You’re almost there.
STEP FIVE
Now, for that soft, sweeping front! Brush the fringe forward, and then twist it around to pin it down securely behind your ear. You want all the hold, so finish things off with a good spritz of hairspray. If you like add some face-framing tendrils by pulling them loose around your ears, then use my Flyaway Kit to smooth everything down and give your hair that flawless, polished look.
And that is how to do a beehive hairdo straight from the runway, to your own front room!
