Men’s Hair Trends: Texture, Length and the Art of Looking Undone
By Andreas Wild, Senior Stylist, Larry King Hair – Notting Hill
Men’s hair is having a moment - and it’s less about sharp lines and freshly clipped fades, and much more about texture, movement and hair that looks like it’s lived a little.
Right now, we’re seeing more and more men asking for longer hair with natural texture. There’s a real shift away from haircuts that need to look “perfect” for two months. Instead, it’s about hair that grows in well, feels relaxed and actually gets better after a couple of weeks.
Why Outgrown Hair Works
"I love outgrown hair," Andreas admits. "A lot of times when men come in, I actually love their hair the way it is. I’ll often work with dry cutting techniques to subtly texture the hair or thin it out where needed.”
It’s not always about getting a dramatic haircut. Sometimes, doing less gives you more. Many men don’t want their hair to look like they’ve just stepped out of the salon. They want it to feel effortless, undone and natural - almost like nothing’s been done at all.
Interestingly, after two weeks is usually when clients tell us they love their hair the most. That’s because the cut has settled, the texture has come through and the hair feels like them. Sometimes, hair just needs time to grow into itself.
The Rise of Longer, Textured Men’s Hair
We’re definitely seeing longer styles for men - whether that’s medium-length layers, grown-out fringes or softer shapes around the face. Texture is key here. Hair should move, feel touchable and never look overly styled.
This is where the right products make all the difference.
Andreas’s Go-To Styling Advice for Longer Hair
“First things first: you don’t need to wash your hair every day. In fact, I actively recommend not washing too often. Hair that’s too clean can be too soft, too flyaway and harder to control.
One of my absolute favourites for adding grip and character is Larry King’s A Social Life For Your Hair. It’s brilliant for men who want that relaxed, surfer-style texture. You can apply it to damp hair and let it air dry, or use it on dry hair to enhance natural movement. It gives the hair that lived-in feel without heaviness.
Another staple is Larry King's My Nanna's Mousse. It’s one of those products everyone in the salon loves because it adds what we call “guts” to the hair. Not dirtiness - but substance. It gives hold, texture and a slightly imperfect finish, which is exactly what you want for longer men’s styles. Hair that’s too soft can look overly polished; this keeps it relaxed and masculine.”
For men who want minimal effort, this is the routine:
- Don't overwash
- Apply product lightly
- Let the hair dry naturally
- Stop before it looks too done
Less Is Always More
The biggest takeaway? Hair doesn’t need to look freshly cut to look great. In fact, some of the best men’s hair is a little undone, a little outgrown and full of texture.
Longer hair for men is about confidence, ease and embracing how hair naturally behaves. With the right cut and the right products, it should feel chilled, effortless and completely personal.
Less is more. Always.
